Sallée, Jr. (1911-2006) enrolled at the Cleveland School of Art (now called the Cleveland Institute of Art) in the 1930s, becoming its first African American graduate. He later taught at Karamu House and throughout the Cleveland school system. During the Great Depression he also worked as a printmaker and mural painter on Works Progress Administration (WPA) art projects.)
