She was director of the Science Museum in London from 1973-1986, and she was instrumental in establishing the National Media Museum in Bradford (Manchester) England during the early 1980's. In 1984 she delivered the MacMillan Memorial Lecture to the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland titled: "The Science Museum and Change over the Last Thirty Years". She is a Patron of the Heritage Railways Association and was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). She also is a Fellow of the Museums Association (FMA) and a Fellow of Newnham College, Cambridge England)
