Striebel, John Henry, 1891-1962


  • [John Henry Striebel (b. September 14, 1891, Bertrand Township, Michigan-d. May 22, 1962), American illustrator and comic strip artist. He began working at age 14 as a political cartoonist for the South Bend, Indiana Daily News. Striebel attended the University of Notre Dame, where he met J. P. McEvoy. The two men later collaborated on the newspaper strip Dixie Dugan, which was distributed by the McNaught Syndicate from 1929 to 1966. Striebel moved to Chicago, Illinois after college and worked as an advertising and fashion illustrator for the Chicago Tribune newspaper, as well as did illustrations for magazines. In 1923, he moved to Woodstock, New York to study painting. Striebel is interred in Riverview Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana.]
