Iroquois Confederacy was founded to reduce blood feuds that had devistated the Iroquois, replacing them with peaceful decision making processes. The result was the Great Law of Peace, or Gayanashagowa, otherwise known as the Great Binding Law of the Iroquois, which applied to the Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas and Senecas, and the Tuscaroras or Haudenosaunee (called Iroquois by the French) and outlined a federal system of government, headed by five Iroquois councils. Hiawatha (or Aionwantha) attempted to spread this message of peace but was unsuccessful until Deganawidah had a vision of a giant white pine reaching to the sky and gaining strength from three counterbalancing principles of life: (1) stable mind and healthy body should be in balance to develop peace; (2) humane conduct, thought and speech were required for equity and justice; and (3) a society of physical strength and civil authority reinforces the clan system.)
