Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project
- [Drew Sullivan and Paul Radu met in 2003 and in 2007 they founded the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project.] Paul had recently founded the Romanian Center for Investigative Journalism in Bucharest, and Drew was in the process of starting up the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIN) in Sarajevo. After 2005 when they pooled their resources with other friends and colleauges, to work on the Power Brokers Project, (which won the first Global Shining Light Award from the Global Investigative Reporting Network (GIJN), they realized they could accomplish more together. They recieved a grant from the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) and built the central hub, country-based center for centraliizing media insurance, commercial databases, tool development, research, and fundraising. The name OCCRP comes from the original grant proposal: Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, (OCCRP) The offices of OCCRP were in Sarajevo and they shared offices with CIN. Paul and Drew eventually registered the Journalism Development Network (JDN) and made OCCRP a trade name. They formed a board of directors with some of the most respected journalists. Drew became JDN's executive director and Paul became OCCRP's executive director. In 2011, OCCRP opened a EU-based branch in Bucharest, co-located with the RISE Project (an OCCRP member, co-founded by Paul). The country-based center model of OCCRP has inspired similar centers throughout the world. It has become one of the world's largest and most effective investigative reporting organizations and it regularly wins international awards.
