Cardozo, Thomas W. (Thomas Whitmarsh), 1838-1881


  • [Thomas W. Cardozo (1838-1881) was an educator and public figure during the Reconstruction Era in the United States. Cardozo was an educator in New York, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Mississippi and served as Mississippi's State Superintendent of Education from 1874 to 1876. While in Mississippi he joined the Republican Party and served as Warren County's circuit court clerk. After the Democratic Party regained control of Vicksburg in 1874, they charged Cardozo with several crimes while he was the county's clerk. The crimes included falsifying witness certificates and embezzlement. A second trial was held in Jackson in 1876 after the first one's jury failed to reach a verdict. Cardozo was had impeachment charges brought against him as State Superintendent in 1876 and was allowed to resign and have the charges dismissed. Due to increased violence and his upcoming second trial, Cardozo left Mississippi for Massachusetts, where he worked in the postal service until his death.]
