found: African American women, 1993:pages 219-220 (Emma Azalia H. (Smith) Hackley; moved with her family to Detroit in 1870 where she studied piano, voice and violin. In 1883 she was the first black student to graduate from Detroit Central High School, and that fall she was the first black student ever admitted to Washington Normal School, where she graduated in 1886. Eloped in 1894 to Denver and entered the University of Denver School of Music as its first black student and completed her bachelor's degree in 1900. Moved to Philadelphia where she founded the People's Chorus, later renamed the Hackley Choral Society. Later studied in Paris, then retured to the U.S. where she founded the Hackley Foreign Scholarship Fund to enable other African Americans to study abroad. Began giving voice lessons. Moved to Chicago where she founded the Normal Vocal Institute. Throughout her career she authored several books and articles.)
