He had been christened Amos, a young man from the village of Mandere on the River Oyat but was given the name Alexander upon being ordained as a monk (hegumen) at Valamo in 1508 at age 26 by Archbishop Serapion of Novgorod; and the epithet of Svir' (Svirsky) because of the monastery which he founded on the River Svir in Karelia [Svi︠a︡to-Troit︠s︡kīĭ Aleksandro-Svirskīĭ monastyrʹ]. He died on 30 August 1533.
