He studied at St. Olaf College (Bachelor of Music in Theory and Composition, 1977; Bachelor of Arts in Music Education, 1978) and the University of Iowa (Master of Arts in Trombone Performance, 1983). He taught instrumental music at Milaca (Minnesota) High School (1978-1981) and then joined the music faculty at the University of Minnesota, Duluth (1983-1994), where he was an associate professor of music and director of bands. In 1994, he was appointed associate professor of music and director of bands at St. Olaf College)
