Gordon Roe was known for his many writings about art and artists, including Henry Bright of the Norwich School, The Nude From Cranach to Etty and Beyond, Rowlandson: The Life and Art of a British Genius, Victorian Corners: The Style and Taste of an Era, and The Victorian Child, which has been issued in Braille; under the pseudonym Uncle Gordon he also wrote the children's book Clarence Below the Basement; Roe edited Connoisseur magazine from 1933 to 1935 and contributed to numerous periodicals)
