found: WWW site for the American Dance Festival, viewed Mar. 1, 2005:(the Bennington School of Dance, the precursor of the American Dance Festival, was founded in 1934 at Bennington College; remained in Bennington until 1942 (with a one-year sojourn to Mills College, California, in 1939, after which, in 1940 the School of Dance returned to Bennington and incorporated under The School of the Arts); in 1948 program moved to Connecticut as the New York University/Connecticut College School of Dance [no publs. in LC database]; in 1950, the affiliation with NYU was terminated and the name became Connecticut College School of Dance/American Dance Festival; for the 1969 season the name became the American Dance Festival; in 1978, the ADF moved to Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and was formally incorporated as "American Dance Festival, Inc."
