Burnham & Co. as a stenographer; after Burnham's death, Ernest R. Graham made Murphy his secretary and assistant in the new firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst and White, one of the largest architectural firms in the country during the 1920s; Murphy worked in the firm's business and financial departments; after Mr. Graham's death in 1936, three associates--Mr. Murphy, Alfred Shaw and Sigurd Naess--formed the firm of Shaw, Naess & Murphy.
