In 1772 the city was annexed by the Austro-Hyngarian Empire. Seized by Poland in 1919 the city was formerly annexed to Poland by the Treaty of 1921 Mar. 18. After the reunification of the Western Ukrainian lands to Soviet Ukraine in 1939 Rohatyn became part of the Halyt︠s︡ʹkyĭ raĭon (1964) then later the Rohatynsʹkyĭ raĭon)

In 1415, under Polish rule, the city was granted Magdeburg law, and developed into an important trading and manufacturing center. After the partition of Poland in 1772, Rohatyn was annexed by Austria, and became a county center. In 1939 it became part of Soviet Ukraine and was granted city status)
