The short stream flowed either from Lake Washington to the White River or vice versa, depending on the water height of the lake. When the lake was lowered to connect it with Puget Sound via Lake Union and the Seattle ship canal, the river was eliminated. Early settlers named the river for the contrast of its dark water with that of the White River, which carried light-colored, glacial water.)
