The Dickson Baseball Dictionary, c1989p. 298 (Pine Tar Game/Pine Tar Incident: Infamous 1983 game at Yankee Stadium in which, with two outs in the ninth inning, Kansas City Royals slugger George Brett hit a home run to give the Royals the lead. The umpire ruled that the pine tar on Brett's bat extended beyond the legal limit of 18 inches up the bat handle, nullified the home run, and called Brett out to end the game, giving the Yankees the win. The Royals lodged a protest with the American League president, who eventually ruled in their favor. The home run was restored and the game was later completed with Kansas City ahead with two outs in the top of the ninth)
