These methods are based on operant contitioning (OC), a scientifically established learning theory. Clicker training can be distinguished from more traditional forms of dog training that are based on physical control and domination. In clicker training, the dog learns to behave in desired ways because those behaviors earn reinforcement (something pleasant happens). In general, clicker trainers try to avoid punishment and aversives (unpleasant events), especially during the learning phases of training.)
