found: Enyc. of historic forts(Fort Mims; famous in early 19th-century history, situated approx. 12 miles north of Stockton, Baldwin Co., Ala.; during summer of 1813 area settlers build a stockade surrounding the home of Samuel Mims who operated a ferry on the Alabama River; square fort enclosing an acre of ground, large formidable gates in the eastern and western curtains; blockhouse begun but never finished; at time of massacre held 553 persons; Aug. 30, 1813 a thousand warriors stormed through an open gate; carnage lasted 2 to 3 hours with only 36 white survivors; 1955 5 acre site donated to the state of Ala.; Sept. 1972 site was listed on National Register of Historic Places; monument erected by U.D.C. to mark approximate site of Fort Mims)
