It is shaped like the letter "S" and is bounded on the north by the Strait of Juan de Fuca. In 1862, it was named by Capt. George Davidson of U.S. Coast Survey, to honor Sub-Lieut. Manuel Quimper, who explored Strait of Juan de Fuca in 1790. It had previously been named Dickerson Peninsula in 1841 by the Wilkes Expedition, for Hon. Mahlon Dickerson.)
