A Bao board comprises 32 pits (called mashimo, "holes"; sing. shimo) in a 48 layout. 64 seeds (32 per player) are needed. This is the same equipment that is used for a much wider family of mancala games, most notably Omweso (Uganda) and its many variants; usually, boards that are explicitly designed for Bao can be distinguished in that two specific pits (called nyumba, "houses") have a different shape)
