Summary
Cartoon shows a royal figure in ermine-trimmed robe and crown, skipping atop a spinning globe showing Europe and Africa. A flame, labeled "Spanish War" erupts bringing smoke labeled "Armaments." In December 1936, Britain and much of the western world were transfixed by the news that England's King Edward VIII was planning to abdicate in order to marry divorcee Wallis Simpson, the woman he loved. Britain was a constitutional monarchy, and the king's role was almost entirely ceremonial. Kirby comments on the attention given this news at a time when crises such as the Spanish Civil War were in progress.
