The American Red Cross worker is standing in a trail worn into the sandstone rock on the old Roman road that leads from Durazzo, Albania, to Constantinople. During the long Turkish occupation of this part of the Balkans lines of communication and transportation were given very little attention, only three short highways having been built during several hundred years. It is said that more improvements were made in the roadways during the war and the Austrian and Italian occupation, than ever before, for it was necessary to reconstruct and build a net of military roadways. Although not built with any idea of permanency, they will be the nucleus for Albania's new railway system
