America's petroleum industries pour out fuel and lubricants for the United Nations. The "boss rigger" of one of the largest U.S. oil producing companies gives instructions by phone to workmen who are putting finishing touches on towers for the making of butadiene, an ingredient of synthetic rubber derived from crude oil. The towers are as tall as a seventeen story building and are located in a refining area in the U.S. Southwest state of Texas. Now plants to make synthetic rubber are being built rapidly in America. One of the largest is in the U.S. Pacific coast state of California and has a capacity of 90,000 tons a year. The making of rubber from oil will consititute a further demand on the resources of the U.S. oil industry, which in 1944, according to a U.S. oil industry official, will reach a predictable production total of 1,601,250,000 barrels. Much of this oil will go to the armed forces of the United Nations
