Attended University of Kentucky 1937-1941 and in 1946 received a Ph.D. in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. Joined the chemistry department at the University of Minnesota 1946-1959, then at Harvard 1959-1990, including three years as chairman. Won the Nobel prize in chemistry in 1976 for his work with the element boron. Wrote "The Boron Hydrides".)
