Schandler, a soldier and scholar who was an Army Special Forces officer in Vietnam and wrote several books about the war in which he fought, died July 16 [2015] at his home in McLean, Va.; he was 87; Dr. Shandler was a combat veteran of the Korean War and an assistant professor of social sciences at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in the 1950s; later served two combat tours in Vietnam as a member of the Army's elite Green Berets; in 1975, he retired from the Army as a colonel after having served as a military social aide at the White House from 1967 to 1969 and in the Joint Chiefs of Staff's strategic plans and policy directorate; received his PhD in public administration from Harvard University in 1974; Herbert Yale Schandler was born Jan. 2, 1928, in Asheville, N.C.; After retiring from the Army, Dr. Schandler was a national defense specialist with the Congressional Research Service and a professor of political science at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, a branch of the National Defense University at Fort McNair in Washington; chairman of the National Defense University's department of strategy from 1990 to 1996)
