Served in the Spanish American War. In 1913 he became the army's youngest colonel. Resigned a year later to become chief engineer of the Remington Arms Corporation. Returned to the Army when the United States entered World War I in 1917. Reitred from the army in 1919 as a brigadier general. The following year his private company developed the submachine gun. Died June 21, 1940 and was buried at West Point.)
