found: Lambiek comiclopedia website, viewed June 26, 2009(Allen Saunders (Apr. 24, 1899 - Jan. 28, 1986, USA); attended Chicago Academy of Fine Arts; graduated from Wabash College in 1920; freelanced as both a cartoonist for humor publications & as a detective story writer for pulp magazines; joined the Toledo News-Bee newspaper as a reporter-cartoonist in 1927; 9 yrs. later, produced a comic strip for the Publishers Syndicate about a medicine man, "The Great Gusto"; that strip eventually became "Big Chief Wahoo" & then "Steve Roper"; in 1940, the syndicate asked Saunders to take over "Apple Mary", created by Martha Orr in 1932; working with female artist Dale Conner on the strip, it was re-titled "Mary Worth's Family"; the strip's name was further shortened to "Mary Worth")
