She established a winter retreat at Clover Bend Plantation, Lawrence County, Ark., with a friend, Jane Crawford, in 1883. French visited this home until 1909, and her writing was greatly influenced by the time she spent in Arkansas, with many of her stories based in the state. In 1887, she published a book called "Knitters in the Sun," which consisted of a collection of her short stories. Alice French died Jan. 9, 1934, in Iowa)
