He was 79 years old. Professor Hurwitz assumed the ombudsman post in 1955. At the time, he had given up a prosperous law practice for a position at the University of Copenhagen, where he taught courses relating to the administration of justice. A number of political and legal experts have said that Professor Hurwitz's tenure as ombudsman was the main reason for the worldwide acceptance of that position as an institution)
