found: African American National Biography, accessed December 12 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database:(Cobb, Arnett Cleophus; jazz musician, saxophonist; born 10 August 1918 in Houston, Texas, United States; took lessons on violin, trumpet, and C-melody saxophone; when he found himself as the only violinist in an eighty-piece brass band at Phillis Wheatley High School, he switched to tenor saxophone so he could be heard; worked in Texas as a teenager with the bands of Frank Davis (touring Texas and Louisiana in the summer of 1933) and Chester Boone (1933-1936); was as a member of the legendary (and unfortunately unrecorded) Milt Larkin Orchestra (1936-1942); made a successful comeback (1951) and had a hardworking combo for five years; helped the pianist Red Garland, the comedian Redd Foxx, and the singers Jackie Wilson and Arthur Prysock early in their careers; he also had James Brown as his opening act, which helped lead to Brown's later fame; a concert at Town Hall in New York with Illinois Jacquet (1973) led him making a comeback on the national jazz scene; died 24 March 1989 in Houston, Texas, United States)
