He was a full professor at the University of Montreal . His fields of study include, but are not limited to, the relationship between Amerindians and Europeans in the pre-industrial era, the Canadian socio-economic history of the 17th and 18th centuries , and Canadian family strategy during the same period. . He retired at the end of 2007, although he still taught a few courses at the University of Caen Basse-Normandie (France) in 2008-2009. Having completed a master's degree at Laval University and his doctorate at the University of Toronto , he was appointed assistant professor at the University of Montreal in 1980. Subsequently, he held the title of visiting professor at the universities of Genoa, Pisa and of the Versailles-Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines .
