found: Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992:page 650 (Garrett Augustus Morgan, born on March 4, 1877 in Paris, Ky. Worked as a handyman in Cincinnati, then moved to Cleveland to work in a clothing factory. Patented his design for a gas mask used during World War I. The city of Cleveland gave him a gold medal after the mask was used to successfully rescue men trapped in the Cleveland waterworks on July 25, 1916. Invented an electric light traffic signal with different colored lights for stop, caution and go. Developed glaucoma in 1943 and was nearly blind for the rest of his life. Died in Cleveland on July 27, 1963)
