Served in the Army, lived in Chicago then returned to Kentucky becoming head of the state militia. Served in the Civil War until its end, lived in New Orleans, working as a journalist, until returning to Kentucky once again. Ran sucessfully as a Democratic candidate for governor of Kentucky in 1887, serving from August 30, 1887 until September 2, 1891. Died at his home in Hart County, Ky.)
