found: Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992:page 822 (Simmons University was founded November 25, 1879 as the Kentucky Normal and Theological Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. It was the only Kentucky institution of higher education established and controlled by African Americans. William J. Simmons was president of the institute from 1880 to 1890 and under his leadership it was renamed State University in 1882. In 1918 a State University graduate, the Rev. Charles H. Parrish, Sr. was named its president and renamed it Simmons University. Purchased by the University of Louisville on August 31, 1930. In 1934 it moved to a different location in Louisville and became the Simmons Bible College.)
