Attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1811 then read law for two years with attorney William Richardson of Groton, Mass. At 25 he went to Washington, D. C. then moved to Lexington, Kentucky where he worked as a tutor, worked as a journalist then newspaper editor in Georgetown, Ky. and Frankfort, Ky. Returned to Washington, D.C. where he served as the fourth auditor in the U.S. Treasury, then as postmaster general for five years. Wrote a biography of Andrew Jackson while farming his land near Washington D.C.).
