found: Calisphere, viewed December 1, 2015:obituary (James Turney Allen (September 14, 1873-September 29, 1948), the son of Robert and Martha Allen, was born in Cleveland, but from very early years onward made California his home. He received the A.B. at Pomona College in 1895, the M.A. at California the following year, and the Ph.D. at Yale in 1898. On January 4, 1899, he married Amelia Sanborn, who died in 1945. He is survived by the widow of his second marriage, Mrs. Lois Allen. Professor Allen's cursus honorum at the University of California was as follows: 1898, instructor in Greek and Classical Archaeology; 1899, instructor in Greek; 1903, assistant professor; 1908, associate professor; 1919, professor; 1943, professor, emeritus. He served twice as annual visiting professor at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. He was a founding member of the Pacific Coast Philological Association and its president in 1914-1915. He was president of the Classical Association of the Pacific States in 1924, and president of the San Francisco Archaeological Society continuously from 1939 to his death)
