- found: African American women, 1993:pages 77-78 (Eliza (Simmons) Bryant; born in 1827. In 1893 she became aware that, due to slavery, many aging African Americans had been left without family to care for them in their old age, and were denied admission to white homes for the aged. She advocated for the creation of an African American nursing home. The Cleveland Home for Aged Colored People was incorporated on September 1, 1896 and officially opened on August 11, 1897. Died in Cleveland on May 13, 1907 Her Home was renamed the Eliza Bryant Houme in 1960.)
