War, then resettled beginning in 1784; in 1816 Borough of Middlebury inc. by the state with the power to own land, collect taxes, pass bylaws, and build buildings; its taxes being unpopular, it failed; village of Middlebury inc. 1832 with same powers held by the Borough; at that point, village and town functioned as 2 separate entities; by 1880 taxes for each collected by same tax collectors; town and village merged in early 1960s [one of 50 incorporated villages in Vermont which in 1960s became part of towns in which they were located, losing their incorporation])
