The library began in 1864 as the personal collection of pharmacy student John Uri Lloyd who manufactured drugs with his brother under the name Lloyd Bros. Pharmacists. His older brother, Curtis, joined the firm in 1886 adding his works on botany and mycology. In the 1890s John and Curtis began collecting books for the library, including rare volumes from Europe relating to mycology, botany and pharmaceuticals. The collection outgrew the 1891 building and a new building was constructed in 1907. In 1942 the library and archives of the Eclectic Medical College of Cincinnati were added, and in 1971 the library and museum moved to its current location on Plum Street in downtown Cincinnati.)
