Purton, born October 7, 1886 in Minneapolis, Kansas; B.S. in civil engineering, University of Kansas, 1907; started with Coast and Geodetic Survey on July 1, 1907 and worked there until December 31, 1909; transferred to U.S. Geological Survey on January 1, 1910 and assigned to the Salt Lake City office. On January 1, 1911, he was transferred to the Boise, Idaho District office where he remained until October 1, 1912, when he was transferred to the Survey's Washington, D.C. office. He returned to the Boise on February 4, 1913 and on April 1, 1915 made his final transfer to the Salt Lake City office. Mr. Purton was made District Office Manager on April 1, 1918 and served in that capacity until January 1, 1943, when health reasons relieved him of his administrative duties. He retired from government service on October 31, 1956. He died in 1962 at the age of 76.)
