The school was named Saint Andrews Presbyterian College in 1960; first classes met in 1961. Flora Macdonald College and Presbyterian Junior College (for men) were merged with the new institution in 1961. Flora Macdonald College had been founded in 1896 as Red Springs Seminary in Red Springs, N.C. The name was changed to Southern Presbyterian College and Conservatory of Music in 1903, and to Flora Macdonald College in 1914.
