found: Dictionary of African Biography, accessed May 12, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database:(Clozel, Marie François-Joseph; colonial governor general, colonial agent, foreign military officer; born 29 March 1860 in Annonay, France; had earned a degree in Arabic language from the École des Langues Orientales (School of Oriental Languages) in Paris before pursuing further studies in Islamic culture at the Faculté des Lettres in Algiers; completed his military service in Algeria and entered the colonial service there (1885); spent virtually his entire career in Africa; he joined an exploration group to Chad and the Congo (1892); led his own expedition to the north of Congo (1894-1895); posted to the Ivory Coast as a young colonial officer and was assigned to the Anyi-Ndenye region (1896); was promoted to secretary-general of the colony (1899); became interim governor (1902-1903); took up a new appointment as governor of the French Soudan; was appointed governor-general of French West Africa in Dakar (Afrique Occidentale Française, AOF); founded the Committee for the Historical and Scientific Study of French West Africa (1915); died 10 May 1918 in Rabat, Morocco)
