He died peacefully at his home in St. John's NL on June 9th, 2022; published 20 books and 200-plus papers; graduated from University College, London in 1952 with a degree in Classics; emigrated to Newfoundland in 1953 to take a position teaching French, English and History at Bishop Feild College; In 1968 he founded and became the Head of MUN's Department of Linguistics; after retirement became Henrietta Harvey Professor, Professor Emeritus, and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1997; his research covered a wide variety of topics, but dear to his heart was the work he did on Canadian Indigenous languages, particularly the books Beothuk Vocabularies (1979), A Computer-Generated Dictionary of Proto-Algonquian (1993), and The Micmac Grammar of Father Pacifique; A collaboration with his friend and colleague, Mi'kmaq linguist Bernie Francis (1990))
