(historical commissions) galley (There are several types of historical commissions that operate in very different contexts pursuing very different objectives; Commissions can be officially sanctioned by the state (state-sponsored) or can be set in place by civil society organisations, private or public institutions, research centres or scholars (e.g., the Scholars Initiative in the Balkan region); Some historical commissions focus on the content for history textbooks; Commissions are often a bilateral effort between two nations that have been in conflict in the past; commissions that focus on culture and heritage conducting historical investigations in relation to monuments, commemorations, historic sites within cities, and cultural landmarking; Commissions are set in place by a government in order to develop strategies to preserve and foment cultural heritage within its cities; There are also historical commissions focused on the investigation of social and political unrest or division in the present which are historically rooted in the past; State-sponsored historical commissions often operate in contexts in which interpretative disputes about the past hinder social and political relations in the present fostering deep divisions among groups and, sometimes, causing outbursts of violence and instability; Through the investigative process, historical commissions have the capacity to clarify past events, and unveil unknown facts and/or challenge long-lasting perceptions and myths about the past; They can address issues of (political and moral) accountability and recognition, and ultimately contributing to a process of transformation of public and political perceptions about the past to achieve social change) (DLC)2022016999
