Joined the Union Army in September 1864 and fought with the 41st U.S. Colored Troops. After the war, moved to Bordentown, N.J., then attended Madison University in New York. In 1871 he transferred to Howard University in Washington, D. C. where he received his A. B. degree in 1873. Moved to Kentucky to become pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lexington in 1880, the same year he became president of the Kentucky Normal and Theological Institution, a post he remained in until the summer of 1890. It was renamed Simmons University in his honor.With C. H. Parrish, founded the Eckstein Norton Institute in Cane Spring, Ky. to train blacks as teachers. Died October 30, 1890 in Louisville, Ky.)
