League of Nations. International Committee on Intellectual Co-operation

  • [The Committee on Intellectual Co-opertation (Commission de coopération intellectuelle) was established on January 14, 1922, by the League of Nations and held its first session in August of the same year. As National Committees began to form over the next few years, the Committee began referring to itself as the International Committee on Intellectual Co-opertation (Commission internationale de coopération intellectuelle, or CICI) with increasing frequency, until the name was fully embraced in the mid-1920s. On January 16, 1926, the International Institute of Intellectual Cooperation (Institut international de coopération intellectuelle, or IICI) began operation in Paris and served as the executive body for and was administered by the Committee. The CICI served as the principal and advisory organ of the League's Intellectual Cooperation Organisation (Organisation de coopération intellectuelle, or OCI), which was officially created in 1931 and included the IICI and the International Educational Cinematographic Institute (Institut international du cinématographe éducatif, or IICE). The final session of the CICI was held in 1939 and was then suspended for the duration of the Second World War. In 1946, the CICI was officially dissolved and the OCI was replaced by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which also inherited IICI's archives.]
